This learning programme is intended for all persons who need to empower team members through recognising strengths, encouraging participation in decision making and delegating tasks.  This is a Unit Standard intended for managers in all economic sectors. These managers would typically be second level managers such as a heads of department, section heads or divisional heads, and may have more than one team reporting to them.

What Will You Learn?

  • This learning programme is outcomes-based which means we take the responsibility of learning away from the facilitator and place it in your hands.
  • Your learning will begin in the workshop where you will identify the skills and knowledge you require in order to meet the specific outcomes and assessment criteria contained in the unit standard.
  • In this learning programme, we will be covering the following learning outcomes:
  • Module 1: Recognise team member performance
  • Identify the role, duties and responsibilities of each team member in the section / division / department
  • together with the level of performance expected of them and give an indication of how they fit into the work of the section
  • Tell team members what they do well, what needs improvement and what is expected in the future
  • Measure all feedback against performance expectations, which have been communicated to the team member
  • Give feedback at the time that the event occurs
  • Ensure that feedback is honest, simple, specific and constructive
  • Deal with team members as valued and trusted members of the team
  • Module 2: Encourage participation in decision-making
  • Include team members in division / section / department decision-making by fully informing them of the situation and the decision(s) that needs to be taken
  • Encourage team members to think of solutions to the problem being as innovative as possible
  • Ask team members to provide alternatives, evaluate the alternatives and select one for implementation
  • Seek the best solution through getting team members to debate their viewpoints and work towards finding common ground
  • Module 3: Delegate tasks
  • Analyse the work plan or task and break it down into smaller tasks, programmes or units of work and take a decision as to who in the section is best suited to carry them out
  • Clearly communicate the delegated tasks to employees indicating what is expected, how it must be done and where to get help, if necessary
  • Indicate the decision-making authority required to execute the task to the employee so that team members can react to situations immediately and effectively
  • Establish a system to enable the flow of information by team members
  • Monitor the successful completion of delegated tasks and use the performance as a means of ongoing development
  • Give recognition to the successful achievement of delegated tasks
  • Module 4: Review decisions and performance of delegated tasks
  • Review the decisions taken in small-group and/or whole group situations to decide on their success in reaching the stated objectives
  • Confirm correct decisions and rescind or amend incorrect decisions so as to enable the objectives to be met
  • Review delegated tasks with the person to whom it is delegated to ensure successful completion of task/plan
  • Draw up alternative plans of action, by the group/team, for incorrect decisions and delegated tasks which are not being carried out successfully
  • During the workshop you will complete a number of class activities that will form part of your formative assessment. In this you have the opportunity to practice and explore your new skills in a safe environment. You should take the opportunity to gather as much information as you can to use during your workplace learning and self-study.
  • The workshop will be followed by summative assessment tasks to be completed through self-study in your workplace. In some cases you may be required to do research and complete the tasks in your own time.
